Authorities ID man killed in Biwabik crash

A 25-year-old Aurora man was killed when his pickup rolled into a ditch on the Vermilion Trail in the early hours of Sunday.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that first responders arrived to find a pickup on its roof in the east ditch of Vermilion Trail, just south of the intersection with Ajax Road at about 2:15 a.m Nathan Montgomery, who was the only occupant in the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The man was driving southbound on Vermilion Trail and lost control of the truck near the intersection with Ajax Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The truck then skidded off the road, where it rolled into the ditch and came to rest on its roof. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol and speed appear to be factors, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The roads were wet at the time of the crash and authorities said Montgomery wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
