Golf: Defending champ upset at Northland Invite

The Northland Invitational at Northland Country Club will have a new champion in 2018 after 2017 winner Tyler Hill was upset in the second round by Shane Johnson on Friday.

Johnson, the 16th seed, beat Gregg McCall in the opening round before dispatching top-seeded Hill. Johnson now takes on eighth-seeded Norm MacIver — the former Bulldog hockey player and current Chicago Blackhawks assistant general manager — in today's quarterfinals, which begin at 1:40 p.m.

The 2016 champion, No. 20 Matt Mellin, is in the quarterfinals after beating No. 13 Derek Farrell and fourth-seeded Topher Baron. Mellin takes on No. 12 Ryan Williamson.

On the bottom half of the bracket, Alex Kolquist — the top qualifier and No. 2 seed — will play No. 10 Brian Moores while No. 3 Joel Johnson squares off with No. 6 Jordan Hawkinson.

The semifinals and final are scheduled for Sunday.
