Women's hockey: UMD's Brodt lifts US over Canada
Minnesota Duluth junior forward Sydney Brodt scored the game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining in the third period to lift the U.S. Women's National Team over Canada 2-1 in its second preliminary round game of the 2018 Four Nations Cup on Wednesday night at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The U.S. struck first when Hannah Brandt picked up a loose puck in front of the Canadian net and scored just 1:18 into play.
Former UMD defenseman Sidney Morin helped keep the score at 1-0 when she broke up a two-on-one breakaway 3:39 into the middle frame.
Canada evened the score 3:31 into the third period when Kristin O'Neill connected with Loren Gabel in front for a shot that sailed past Alex Rigsby, who was playing in place of UMD goaltender Maddie Rooney.
After nearly 15 minutes of end-to-end action, Brodt gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead, banging home a rebound off a shot from Brianna Decker.
